Chapter Twelve

The girls’ hall in Castle Hendrik was so much more luxurious than the facility on Yeg where she had grown up that Leka could hardly believe that the purposes of the two places were more or less the same—to prepare girls to serve men faithfully and pleasurably. The facility on Yeg had been spare and clinical. The girls’ hall in this Magisterian castle looked like Alder’s sumptuous abode on her own planet, except bigger, with elegant, pillow-filled rooms, and plenty of space for the girls to stretch out as they liked.

Mistress Dera said, as she led Leka through the common room, where there were eight or nine of the same sort of low, comfortable couch Leka had seen for the first time on Alder’s planet, “We use this room for training, as well as for socializing and relaxing. Girls who are not serving their lords, and have their lords’ permission to come, are always welcome here. Most girls, after they first arrive, spend several weeks here getting ready, but your case seems rather different, according to his highness, so you will only spend one night in one of our bedchambers. Nevertheless, as long as you are serving his highness in the castle, and as long as he allows it, you should come here and get to know the other girls. Many of us have found that the friendships we have made in this common room have proved to be the dearest of our lives.”

That made Leka think of Malda, back at the facility on Yeg, and she felt a lump come into her throat. Dera seemed to notice her distress, for she said, “I know I am not to ask about your past, Leka, but I think I can tell that you have left behind friends that you love. I think you will find life here on Magisteria can make up for that, in time. Your duties in his highness’ bedchamber will sometimes prove a trial. But the lords of Magisteria were wise enough to establish the girls’ halls as a refuge. It is also very important that you know that as the mistress of girls, I will be checking on you at least once a week. There are strict rules about what your lord is permitted to do to you, and although they give him the right to do many things that you will almost certainly find difficult, and even shocking, nevertheless it is my job to keep you safe and well, and I take that job very seriously.”

Leka longed to pour out her heart to Dera, and to tell her all about Yeg and how she had been preparing all her life to serve a man that way. She longed to ask about the things Dera said Hend, the man she must now think of as her lord, it appeared, would do to her. She longed to say that really she suspected that as difficult or shocking those things were, she would yearn for him to do them to her again and again.
